One of the most important steps of career planning is writing a good career action plan. An action plan is basically a road map to help you move from one point to another in your career. If you are looking at becoming a psychiatrist, this would involve taking up college, then on-the-job training and then finally starting your own practice. If you are looking at obtaining a subspecialty in psychiatry, then there is additional planning required for taking education and examination for the same. It is one thing to know your destination but without knowing where you are standing, even a map would not be able to guide you to your destination. Hence, the first thing is to take a stock of yourself. Make a list of your employment history irrespective of whether it seems relevant to the occupation you want to pursue. This is because even though the actual job may not be relevant, there may be skills that you utilized during that job that could prove handy in your desired occupation as well. Communication skills, problem solving skills, computer skills, crisis management, and time management are some skills that are useful in any field. Also, note down educational background this includes degree you have attained, workshops and seminars you have attended, certification, training, etc. Any volunteer work should also be included.

With a self-assessment test, you should be able to understand your strengths and arrive at some occupations that best suit your personality. After exploring these shortlisted occupations, you should be able to arrive at one or two occupations that you want to pursue.
