Condition of Slum Education for Slum Children in India

It is appalling to see the condition of the slum children when we take into account their education. Slum education in India has been and continues to be at an all time low. India is investing billions in its infrastructure. The commonwealth games have ensured that. Yet investment in the education of slum children has become two unrelated concepts. Most ironic, is the fact that the slum children of New Delhi do suffer the worst, when the hub of the games is centred around New Delhi. In addition, our education system is such that children are enrolled only when they are six years of age. Therefore, this means that poor children whose families struggle to make ends meet allow their children to beg on the streets before they can be, legally allowed to enrol in any corporation school.
The education of these slum children is restricted to corporation schools also known as slum education schools. Such schools are over-crowded and under staffed. The teachers in many instances are not very well-educated. As a result, most of these children progress into primary school without knowing how to read or write properly. At such a stage parental knowledge of numbers and alphabets would be a great help to these deprived children. That is not to be the case. Due to this, many or most of these parents are illiterate or poorly educated.
A brand new urban phenomena, is tutoring. Children who play at school do so in the belief that study is for tuition time. Sadly, these slum children cannot afford extra tuition, as they are poor. This leaves them at the mercy of our slum education system. The Indian government has repeatedly come under fire for its poor state of education. The textbooks prescribed for these slum education systems that tutor the slum children sounds pathetic. The basic flaws are grammatical flaws, factual errors, misprints and the like that plague the Indian Education System.
Lack of attendance is the hallmark of slum education of slum children in India. Due to poor education facilities and incompetent teachers, many children barely see progress in their education. This disillusions most and so they drop out. The government has a great role to play in stopping this new phenomenon. The government has for its part, made an effort to do the same. It has introduced mid-day meal schemes, and it does offer money for girl children to come to school and study. However, all this is not helping. The mid-day meal scheme has come under fire for providing low quality food to the children. There have been cases of old food being-served.
All this does paint a depressing picture of the condition of slum education of slum children in India. It is meant, to do so. The status of these slum children is pathetic. The government has to revamp this system of slum education that is prevalent. Lives of these children hang, in the balance. If slum kids need a brighter future the government should take steps to enhance the quality and accessibility of these institutions.
