The World Wide Web is a great location to find worksheets. They cover a wide variety of information and can be very helpful in supporting teachers in the classroom. In the UK worksheets can be used at all loveless, in England at KS1 ? KS2 ? KS3 and in Scotland to support the curriculum for Excellence.

Worksheets can assist pupils build a working knowledge of topics. Although often found in numeracy and literacy, worksheets also have a place in subjects like Music and Art. Worksheets can be used to support self initiated activities and self paced learning. They are really useful when a class has pupils of mixed capabilities since they can all set their own pace.

Often forgotten in the UK, home schooling nevertheless has a significant number of pupils, although not yet at the volumes that exist in America. Sometimes home schools are on a very tight budget and so the free (or very cheap) resources available from the World Wide Web can be great.

In addition to worksheets teachers and parents often use flashcards. These tend to be information specific. For example there might be a number of cards each with a letter of the alphabet on it. Flashcards can let you understand exactly what information your student knows and significantly, what they don’t. They are a straightforward and easy way to rapidly run through words, letters or numbers. They’ll also help your student explain what they are seeing in a visual manner which can really help when trying to understand how to help them.

Unlike worksheets flashcards allow you to put small amounts of focussed and appropriate material on a single card for viewing. They are also great for their portability. It’s often easy to take them with you allowing you to change the teaching environment from outdoors to indoors. Flashcards are an excellent tool to encourage highly ?active? learning.

Worksheets and flashcards are often created by teachers or purchased in educational stores or departments. They can also help with memory skills, mathematical skills, advanced discussion work, interaction via games, speaking and listening skills of all ages.

Obama Grants - Initiated To Encourage Moms to Get a Degree

By Fred Jackson

Although higher education is important, there are often a number of obstacles that can hinder potential students from enrolling in college. For single mothers especially, family obligations and financial concerns are often at the top of this list. Obama grants are intended to encourage mothers to return to college to earn a degree, in an attempt to ease some of the concerns associated with going to college.

In a number of cases, the purpose of federal grants is to help disadvantaged groups to attend college. One endowment often given to low-income students is the federal Pell grant. Since the Obama administration has stated that it places a high priority on education, the benefits of Pell grants have been augmented in order to be a greater help to potential students. A title given to a portion of the standard Pell grant program is the Scholarships for Moms program. Working moms are especially encouraged to apply for this. The administration believes that by equipping low-income mothers to earn a degree, this will provide a stimulus to the lagging economy, and be a great benefit to families of those mothers as it will in turn increase their earning power in the work force.

$5,000 from a Pell grant may not seem like a lot of money, when you look at the high cost of education these days, but it should help defray the other expenses associated with going to college. A student has to pay for housing and travel expenses, as well books and supplies. For single moms, these miscellaneous expenses may also include childcare. One great advantage of the Pell grant award is that the money awarded does not necessarily have to be applied to college tuition. Any expense that can be seen to be necessary to obtaining an education, can be covered by the grant money.

This program does not cater specifically to traditional students - it provides opportunities to traditional and non-traditional students alike. Mothers wanting to return to college to earn a degree are just as welcome as a student who is fresh out of high school. Consideration is given equally to mothers who would like to stay home and take care of their children while doing online courses, to potential students who would prefer to go to a small community college. The most important thing is that all willing students are able to earn a degree that will provide them with significant opportunity in the job market.

Obama grants are purely an effort by the current administration to show that education truly is the key to a bright future. Everyone from young adults to working mothers has a chance to go to college, by the allocation of a significant amount of money to pay for education.

The hope of Cross Curriculum topic work

By John from Learning Huddle

Do you use Cross Curriculum learning

Cross curriculum teaching is an effective way to adapt the literal, interpretive, and critical thinking skills which develop as a result of reading. Pupils can be set Learning ?Quests? which cross curriculum boundaries this allows them to build their skills naturally.

In Britain there are different levels in the schools; in England KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and in Scotland the curriculum for excellence. Recently all of these levels have been revised to increase the reliance on cross curriculum teaching. The general thinking is that using methods that mix subjects in a natural way brings significant teaching benefits.

Achieving Cross Curriculum teaching can be challenging. Much of the material available for KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and the curriculum for excellence is based on the older systems. These systems tended to categorise the material into clearly bounded subjects. So whilst it’s possible to find plenty of material that relates to numeracy it’s hard to find material that brings together numeracy and literacy.

To achieve cross curriculum learning teachers often create teaching Trails or Quests. These are generally subject based and are able to cross curriculum boundaries in a natural way. With the push at KS2 and Curriculum for Excellence this method is likely to become more common.

Since there is a shortage of good of material available to allow the building of these trails teachers are now turning to the internet. Unfortunately this is often a demanding. Although the internet is a great source of literature it is often poorly produced and not suitable for pupils. Worse still is the dependence of many sites on advertising. All too often a child will access a site and be faced with good subject material but highly inappropriate adverts.

Recently there have been some new sites that have joined the ranks of school suppliers that are starting to offer the type of information needed by teachers. Sites like Learning Huddle offer teachers lots of subject literature but in a controlled environment. The lack of advertising and strong topic information ensure that teachers don’t have to spend many hours researching only to find they end the night with little to show.

So when teachers are now considering what to do for KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and the curriculum for excellence they are now often turning away from the more traditional books and looking to the internet. The added benefit of this approach is the motivation that children seem to feel when they are involved with computers and the internet. There is a significant amount of subjective evidence that shows that children can be stimulated to learn when the material comes from a computer.

It seems unlikely that books and written material will disappear from schools. However there is definitely a push towards using the internet and computers in general to source material. So the needs of the revised KS1 - KS2 ? KS3 and the curriculum for excellence guidance for UK teachers may be met more and more in this way. In particular it is likely that much of this will be through the use of using topic information. By combining the various methods and approaches to teaching, the pupils can expect to gain much more valuable information out of teaching time.
