Drug Use in Young People (harvard business school)
No commentsBy Millard Franco
This November, there have been several new UK studies released which indicate a frightening trend in the abuse of drugs and alcohol, which affects young people and their safety.
One survey of over 8000 young drivers (17-24 years old) carried out by Auto Trader, which is a UK motoring magazine and website, showed a dangerous trend towards driving under the influence of either drink, drugs or both.
In today’s binge drinking and drug abuse culture amongst young people it is unfortunately no surprise that as many as 17% of those surveyed admitted regular use of Cannabis (Marijuana), more alarmingly 12% frequently use the dangerous class A drug Cocaine, and 10% revealed regular use of Ecstasy. However, the most considerable risk comes from upwards of 10% admitting that they regularly drove their vehicles whilst being under the influence of drink or drugs.
When questioned regarding driving under the influence, over 40% felt “fine” to drive their vehicles after abusing drugs and 31% found it acceptable to drive after drinking alcohol. A considerable proportion were unaware of the legal drink driving limits for alcohol consumption and consequently 8% had already had a road traffic accident while under the influence, with a further 11% admitting a near miss.
Based upon road traffic accident statistics, over a third of deaths on the UK’s roads involve young people aged 25 or under, so this is obviously a serious issue. This equates to the death or serious injury of a young driver or passenger every hour on average across the UK.
Other recent statistics include the number of younger teenagers using drink or drugs. In fact, 1 in 7 people admitted to Accident and Emergency departments across the UK last year were under 14 - a total of over 2239 cases. Many people have blamed a surge in advertising for alcoholic drinks between 3 and 5pm which corresponds to when children have arrived home from school. Of course, the government spends around 3.7 million on anti-drinking and alcohol awareness campaigning, but this is dwarfed by the estimated 200 million spent on advertising by the drinks industry.
The average UK starting age of Heroin use in many towns and cities is just 15 years old, so we have an obvious duty to deter young people from getting inadvertently caught up in drug addiction through misguided experimentation.
So what can be done about this?
Well, many parents are unaware that home drug test kits and alcohol test kits are easily obtainable and can be used to act as a strong deterrent. They can also be used by teenagers as a valid reason why they can’t take drugs when put under peer pressure. Being able to say “Sorry, I can’t take drugs because I get tested at home” really can make a difference.
The responsible use of home drug testing products (with open communication and co-operation) can play a pivotal role in keeping children and teenagers safe and can help to mend relationships and build trust. Some people ask whether testing removes trust from a relationship, but we firmly believe that the substance abuse has already done that in many instances and home testing can be used to rebuild trust.

Baby Strollers of Every Kind
By Irvin Mcclain
As you know there is a wide variety of baby strollers available to choose from. Your choice of strollers will be affected by how many children you plan to use it for, how you are going to use the stroller and where, and finally your budget. All things aside your baby’s comfort and safety will also influence your choice. Let’s take a look at some of the types of strollers available to you.
The standard stroller will fit one child and there are many different features on standard strollers such as play trays, parent trays, fabrics, and handlebars. On many strollers handlebars are now height adjustable which is great back saver.
Double strollers have two seats. There is a variety of seating arrangements for double strollers. The traditional double seat is one behind the other - tandem style. Tandem seating has the first child with a good view and he one in the rear seat sees the back of the other’s head. A variant of the tandem seating is stadium seating. Think of bleachers where each seat is raised slightly above the one in front of it allowing those in the rear to see what’s going on. There is side by side seating as well as face to face seating.
Jogging strollers are very popular because they enable you to bring your child along on a run. The jogging stroller has a triangular wheel base with two large wheels in the rear and one wheel in the front. They have many attractive features. An added safety feature is a wrist strap on the handle bar. This is worn so that when you stop, the stroller doesn’t roll away from you. As always whenever you stop your stroller the break should always be applied. The wrist strap is added protection. Jogging strollers are available for multiple seating as well.
Triple strollers are terrific for triplets or three children. Seating arrangements can be side by side but most have tandem seating or stadium seating. When the stroller is full of kids and you are pushing it will help you achieve your goals of fitness.
Convertible multiple strollers are available where they can be made into double seater’s with additional seats and a transverse bar. You might want to check if this option is available for the particular stroller you are considering.
Umbrella strollers are very inexpensive. They are generally easier to fold and unfold. They are very lightweight and store easily in a car trunk. They are terrific for short trips to the Mall or short walks. They do not work well on all terrain. They do come in multiple seating as well. The only drawback I had with umbrella strollers is that if anything was hung on the handle it caused the carriage to tip backwards.
Light weight strollers are slightly heavier than the umbrella strollers and slightly less than the standard stroller. They typically fold in a single hand motion. They also resemble the standard type stroller. They also come in multiple seating.
Carriage Strollers are convertible strollers in that you can change them from a carriage (a bed on wheels) to a stroller. This is great for infants that are unable to sit up yet. The handle is reversible so you can turn it into a stroller which is great for children who are sitting up.
Bike strollers or trailers are installed by attaching it to the rear wheel. There are two seated models available. They can be converted from a trailer to a stroller with no tools. The restraint system is a five-point harness for each child.

Giving Your Baby an Unusual Name
By Irvin Mcclain
What’s in a name? Er…well, everything, really! Of course your little bundle of joy is the sweetest, most beautiful thing you have ever seen and you want to choose a name that reflects his/her individuality, spirituality, uniqueness and all-round special-ness.
But wait a minute!
Remember that the unique baby name you choose will help define junior’s life - how they are viewed and accepted - for many, many years. What sounds cute and original for a 5-year-old, may not sound so funky for a 15-year-old…and what about a 55-year old?
Time was when only celebrities could get away with unique baby names (Zowie Bowie, Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa, etc), but in the modern world, individuality is more prized than ever before, and increasingly, this starts with our names. Great idea - but don’t allow a flash of a self-indulgence to condemn your child to a lifetime of problems; it’s reported that a Chinese couple named their child “Saddam Sars” to mark the current world events at the time of the birth! I just hope it means something nice in Mandarin, or Cantonese!
This probably wouldn’t have happened in Germany, where names can only be registered if they recognizable, do not ridicule the child and are gender specific. Perhaps there is at least one Chinese child in the world, who will grow up wishing he/she were German!
So - assuming you are not German - what should you do if you want to create a unique baby name, without creating too many problems? Here are some tips and some warnings to make the process less painful:
1. Anagrams: try creating an anagram of an existing name.
2. Father and Mother: try using derivatives of one of the parents’ names, or a combination of both. Alternatively, how does the mother’s maiden name sound as a first name?
3. Telescoping: try dropping letters from another name or a word, until you get a nice-sounding unique baby name.
4. Spelling: an unusual spelling of a common name creates uniqueness. However, remember that your child will be condemned to a lifetime of “…that’s David spelt D..A..Y..V..I..D…” conversations.
5. Pronunciation: another trick is to pronounce a common name in an unusual way. But this can also lead to a lifetime of corrections and explanations - as well as teasing and accusations of pretentiousness.
6. History: do some research into names that were popular in previous eras, but have become less so.
7. Family History: are there any unusual baby names that can be used to honor family members or ancestors? But beware family politics…
8. Nature: many names come from the natural world, particularly flowers (e.g. Rose) and it’s a great source for unique baby names (e.g. Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple).
9. Geography: another useful source of great names - grab an atlas and start searching. David and Victoria Beckham called their first son Brooklyn, which many people think is a cool-sounding name. However, it’s reported that the choice was made because that’s where conception took place. Hmmm, imagine a lifetime in which your name is a constant reminder of your parents having sex! Eeeuuuuww!!!
10. Celebrities: famous people with slightly unusual names are a common source of inspiration. There are lots of teenage “Kylie”s running around the UK since Kylie Minogue’s arrival on the music scene at end of the ’80’s, and her recent resurgence, will have created a second wave of them. And I’m sure many little “Be’yonce”s have been popping up over the last few years. The only problem is that names like these very soon begin to sound a little silly and “wannabe”.
11. Foreign Names: consider using a foreign version of a name, e.g., Pedro, instead of Peter. Or try using a name from a completely different culture.
12. Nicknames: try using a nickname e.g. Angie, instead of Angela or Angelina. However, make sure the name is will pass the “age test” - see number 17 below.
13. Middle Names: a great way to accommodate individuality when naming your baby, is to combine a common first name with a unique second/middle name. The benefit of this is that your child can avoid embarrassment throughout his/her life by ignoring it of keeping it hidden.
14. Initials: when you have settled on some baby names, check that the initials aren’t embarrassing. This is an easy trap to fall into and can lead to a lifetime of misery. “Zina Indigo” are may be nice sounding names for your lovely daughter, but make sure your surname doesn’t begin with “T”!
15. First Name-Surname: check how the selected first name combines with the surname. Make sure the two names do not create some something recognizable, to prevent a lifetime of teasing. Also, check the rhythm of the two names; a different number of syllables in each name usually flows much better. Avoid rhyming the 2 names at all costs or your child will hate you forever!
16. The loudness test: try saying the name softly, at normal pitch and shouting it very loudly. You may be surprised at the results.
17. The age test: try to visualize your child with the name as a baby, as a teenager, as a young adult, a mature adult and as a senior citizen. A name can create completely different perceptions of the individual at separate stages of life.
18. The meaning: the final test of the baby name that you choose should be to check its meaning (if any). Don’t leave your child open to getting a nasty surprise later in life.
Whatever unique baby name you decide, don’t fall into the trap of self-indulgence. Remember, it’s not about you, it’s all about your child. Your grand design to celebrate the uniqueness of this new human being, may eventually lead to a lifelong, desperate desire for conformity and anonymity. Even Zowie Bowie eventually changed his name to “Joey”…

Questions to Ask Yourself When Your Child Acts Out (school of business)
No commentsBy Marlin Rollins
Every parent has been there. Your usually angelic (or at least moderately well behaved) child is suddenly intractable, full of rage, or even engaged in a full-blown temper tantrum. Worse, your usual discipline measures don’t even make a dent in the attitude or anger. What to do?
First of all it is important to gain some modicum of control. If you can’t get your child under control and you are in a public place then remove yourselves from the public eye. If you are home send your child to their bedroom. If you are somewhere public then try to find some privacy in an empty room, bathroom, or even your car. Sometimes taking control and giving everyone some breathing room will defuse the situation, but if not then ask yourself three key questions:
First, is there a physical cause? Is your child tired or hungry or overstimulated? Children’s bodies do not have the same stamina as adults and if they are not given several small meals (or larger meals interspersed with small snacks) and a good night’s sleep as well as some down time during the day they simply lose the ability to cope. Some children simply shut down or fall down (asleep) but others act out instead. In addition, children have only the limited experience of their short lives and a day that is too full of emotion or activity can overwhelm them. Sometimes simply too much change or newness can be overwhelming to a child used to a specific routine or environment.
Second, is there anything else going on in your child’s life that might be causing stress or is there anything else going on in your life that might be causing stress to your child? Children are creatures of habit. While they enjoy the new they also crave routine. Sometimes they need more time to adjust to routine and sometimes they actually need the ritual of discipline to give them security. The familiar dynamic of discipline is comforting because at least that hasn’t changed.
Third, has your child matured or moved into a different phase of development since your last discipline strategy was developed? For example, when my son was three we suddenly discovered our traditional time-out method wasn’t working. However with a slight modification (changing the location) we were back in business. As he grows older the time-out is now longer and often comes with built-in penalties for continued misbehavior. As your child grows and develops so does your discipline strategy. Perhaps you can simply modify the existing method or perhaps you need to come up with a whole new plan.
After reviewing your answers to these three key questions hopefully it is time to release your child from their time out and to talk things through. Ask your child what is going on? Ask your child what their punishment (if further punishment is needed) should be? Younger children won’t always be able to express themselves fully but you may learn some surprising insights into your child’s mind. Then follow through with what you have decided as a punishment and make sure your child understands that while you love them you will not tolerate the behavior you just punished.

Seven Things Your Kids Should Know About Money (stanford business school)
No commentsBy Marlin Rollins
what to tell your kids about money, kids money, children money, kid and money, child and money
If I had a dollar for every time I have been asked by a parent what to tell your kids about money, I’d be a millionaire. There are many different aspects of money management you can & should tell your children about. Here I will share with you what I believe are seven of the most important principles
1. Money can be exchanged for goods or services.
This is one of the first few lessons you should teach your child once they are old enough to understand - usually around the age of 3 years. Next time you go down to the corner store to buy one or two items, let your child hand the money to the cashier. By doing so, they will gain a greater appreciation of the concept of being able to exchange money for things you want or need.
2. One should be careful with money.
Some people I know, seem to think that any coins with a value under 50 cents are just too small to be bothered using, and so when cleaning out their loose change from around the house will simply throw these smaller coins in the bin. What a waste! Encourage your child to be careful with all denominations of money, and show them how those small coins can add up, by starting a family small coins box. Maybe you could use the money to fund small family outings (a trip to the shop to get ice creams).
3. Money has to be earned.
There are many people in the world these days that don’t seem to have ever learned this lesson. They sit around home and expect handouts so they can live, or turn to a life of crime to fund their existence. Be careful not to give your child money every time he or she asks, without expecting anything in return i.e. completion of household chores.
4. Encourage one-third savings, one-third donations, one-third spending.
The exact proportions in which your child divides their money are up to each individual family to decide, based on their beliefs and the needs of the child. This can quite easily be achieved by providing them with 3 piggy banks or moneyboxes - one for spending, one for saving & one for donating.
5. Avoid borrowing money wherever possible.
It is always much harder to repay money that has been borrowed, than to save your money. Some loans, such as home loans, tend to be unavoidable though. A good rule of thumb is if you don’t have the cash to buy it, you can’t afford it!
6. Money isn’t your best friend so don’t let it control your life.
Quite simply, try not to become so over committed with your finances, that you are forced to work 60 to 70 hours a week to continue the lifestyle. If you do, then you are letting the money control your life. You don’t usually need the fancy car (and car loan) or overseas holiday (and personal loan). All these things are nice, but only if you can easily afford them!
7. Show them how to budget & live within their means
This is one of the most important skills that your child must know, that so many people don’t seem to know how to do. Recent surveys have shown, that many people are spending 10% to 20% above what they earn. They are earning enough money to fund their lifestyle, but they simply aren’t budgeting it, and so are wasting large amounts of money each week.
With these seven lessons under their belt, they will be off to a great start, but there are many more money skills that your child will benefit enormously from learning. To learn more, visit the Kids Money Tips web site.

Professional Occupation of a Historian
By Michael Russell
While a historian includes both amateurs and professionals, usually the professionals are better known as historians. Recent trend is to acknowledge those who have acquired at least a bachelor’s degree in the field of history and documents of the events of the past. Having such degrees is not a difficult task. Apart from multiple colleges and universities, a host of online institutes are now offering online degrees on history. Since the later part of the 19 th century historian has been recognized as one of the professional occupations.
Historian’s Job
Major task of a historian is to make historical analysis through the process of investigation and comparing the conflicting ideologies. Such method helps the historian in creating coherent narratives of the happenings of the near and far past. Today the historical analysis is usually drawn upon multiple other social sciences. Such sciences could be sociology, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, politics, linguistics, and economics to mention a few. Even the works of ancient historians’ carries immense value though may not be coherent with the modern day ideologies. Job prospects of historians are also available in college directory provided by informative websites.
Contribution of Modern Historians to Society
It is true that works of many ancient historians carry immense educative value and they have surpassed their time. Such works are also valuable with reference to the particular culture of a country or society. Many earlier historical accounts find dismissed with the new generation historians though they may be valuable in consideration of their contemporary culture.
Modern Day Historian
While the early history was highly tilted towards great men; no such thing preoccupies the minds of modern historian. Present day historian is a complete departure from the war, high politics and diplomacy based history writing of the past.
Features of Modern Historian
Since 1960s history has been continuing as one of the academic disciplines that have experienced numerous evolutions. Topics that were underestimated in the past, suddenly revived to become the highlight in many fronts. Revisionist historians at the same time are attempting to set the records as straight as possible.
For people who think that a historian is only concerned with academic affairs would find the highly educative and qualitative writings of Michael Russell who writes regularly on this website eye openers for them. The site also provides information on obtaining online degrees in the subject.

Interior design salary
By Michael Russell
Types of Solutions Provided by Interior Designer
Usually the interior designer will provide solutions with three aspects. Solutions they provide would be functional and applicable to the environment. Secondly, such solutions should invariably enhance the quality in the interior environment of the structure with which they are working. Finally, the solution should also be aesthetically attractive and acceptable. At the same time with the customer consciousness about greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency across the globe, encouraging the principles of environmental sustainability would be the other requirement.
Interior Design Process
Normally the interior design process would be very systematic and coordinated. Designer has to undertake a lot of research, analysis, and integration works to run the creative process. Basic objective of the design process would be satisfying the requirements of the client and the interior space taking a shape fulfilling the goals of the project.
Interior Design Job Specification
Multiple aspects of interior design jobs include environmental psychology, designing the products, decorative patterns, and architecture. Designers have to take special care of aesthetics and cosmetics. Floor plans, home renovation as well construction codes will all have impact on the work of the designer. Job of the designer is not confined to residences alone but encompasses all types of commercial, cultural, strategic, and heritage structures as well.
Training and Specialization
In many countries including USA and UK , the interior designers require special accreditation. Prior to that, they must complete the academic courses on interior designing. Many universities , colleges, and schools offer such training and specialization courses and a host of online academies are now offering perfectly valid online degrees as well. In United States trained interior designers can appear in the LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design examination to receive their accreditation in the most potent area of interior designing.
Continuous Evolution
With the frequently changing tastes of people all over the world it is natural that the interior designing also undergoes continuous evolution. Today, however all designs are made with a special emphasis on the environmental aspects for maintaining the ecological balance. Skill in these fields help the designer get enhanced interior design salary .
One should not forget that interior decoration and design are two different things and designing involves a lot of technical, analytical as well as creative skills including the proper appreciation of architectural issues.
An expert in the field of interior designing; Michael Russell has been writing regularly on this website that provides all information relating to training, education including online degrees, career building in interior designing, all related issues and interior design salary.
How to Achieve Better Information Retention
By Otto Wynn
Improving information retention provides us many benefits. One is the ability to remember daily lessons better. Another is being able to effectively apply these lessons into tasks and success. For students, there is no better time to have good memory than during exams since most exams are based on what students have remembered during the review than what you have learned in classes. For other professionals, memory becomes very useful in performing their job right.
Memory, therefore, is important in daily life.
But no matter how we put it, there are people who still lack the ability to retain necessary information. The fact is, these people do not necessary lack the “ability”. They only lack the necessary technique on how to retain information better.
The question now would be, “what are those techniques that would improve memory?”
First of all, memory techniques are not theories on how to improve memory; rather they are practical and proven methods.
There are two major ways to learn and remember: through vision and hearing.
Auditory learners - People who are inclined to remember better through their ears have the tendency to intently listen to instructions and intently retain what they hear. These people are most likely to relay auditory information to other people better or to transfer what they hear on their notes. They are also able to listen to information that is relatively unnoticeable to normal people. Auditory learners are not special though; they are just capable of learning better through their ears.
Visual learners - Visual learners posses the ability to remember vividly what they have seen. They can easily identify signs, symbols, images, directions, and written information. Visual learners make up roughly 65% of the population.
Having said these, here are the useful techniques to improve either your auditory and visual senses:
Image-Name Technique - Is helpful in remembering names. This technique is used basically to remember names with physical characteristic of a person. For example, KATIE HOLMES for “Her kitty (for Katie) is left alone in their home (for Holmes)”.
Acrostic - Is taking the first letter of each word and inventing sentence out of it. For example, to remember the G-clef notes on the sheet music (E, G, B, D, F), we can use EVERY GOOD BOY DOES FINE.
Acronym - Is the opposite of acrostic. The first letter of each word of a series is taken out to form another word. For example, the colors of the rainbow are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet, thus, ROY G. BIV. Another example would be Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telephase or IPMAT to remember the phases of cell division
